Tell me a little bit about yourself…

My name is Melody Hay. I have been painting seriously since 2004, but have always loved Art. I am currently the Assistant Editor of TheArtList.com and recently moved from Dallas back to my hometown of Weatherford, TX. I have been participating on and off in ArtLoveMagic events since 2007.

As you have grown within your talent, what inspires you to create?

There is a burning inside to express myself through art that I can’t do in any other way. My style changes as I change, but the need to create is always the same.

How long have you been producing your craft and why did you begin this form of expression?

I started painting in high school and really fell in love with it in college. It has always felt like something that comes second-nature to me. I love using color and making a mess. I also love the forgiving nature of paint over pencil or pen & ink. I even love the smell of art supplies.

What do you ultimately want to accomplish with your talent?

I am currently at an impasse. I tried running a gallery, and that was short-lived and so maybe I’ll do that again at some point, but right now I am re-calibrating and seeing what God has in store for me.

As one of Dallas’ amazing artists, what advice would you offer to the next generation of creative females?

Find out who you truly are, and give yourself time to find that answer. Then be that person to the best of your ability with no apologies. Warning: This is a lifelong process.

Do you have a specific childhood memory that has inspired your life as an artist?

I remember coloring in nursery school and discovering that the colors green and blue mixed together rock. 🙂 Teal is still my favorite color.

What web address can one go to to view more of what you do and contact you?

“Local Painter and Lead Producer of girlShow 2010 Deborah Driscoll recently hung this piece in our gallery at It’s A Grind Coffee House in Deep Ellum and was fortunate enough to sell it to one of the coffee shop’s patrons within days of its display!”

The piece is called, “Joy” and I miss it already.  Glad to sell my work to someone who really loves it,  and to make a little money doing what I love!

This is not the first time that a girlArtist has had success selling with ArtLoveMagic.  Kathryn Petroff, Melody Hay, Riki Johnson, Desiree Mazzola, and probably several more that I can’t think of at the moment have sold pieces (in some case pretty expensive pieces) at one of our shows or off the wall at one of our participating galleries.

Riki Johnson's "Liberation"

Just another dose of why we do what we do – to provide opportunities to our artists and their customers to find each other and make dreams come true.  Once the piece was sold I went out to my local art store and bought some new paints.  I am determined to create a series of these paintings using this new joyful technique.  It’s amazing how one small success can inspire you to do much, much more.  Thanks to It’s A Grind for the gallery space and to Carolyn Collins for taking this amazing picture for me before I said goodbye to my “Joy” for good.

Yours in Joy,

Deborah Driscoll
